![]() I agree, it's really just part of one's education to learn the correct terms. The reason for the word "barrel" in "barrel roll" is because in that maneuver, you are inscribing a corkscrew path, as if the plane were moving along the surface of an imaginary barrel. An aileron roll is simply a maneuver to rotate the plane around its longitudinal axis. We were taught both in USAF pilot training. Point of terminology: often people mistakenly say "barrel roll" when what they really mean is a simple aileron roll. When you master this step you can start practicing four points ("facet") roll to learn to compensate with the rudder. You may need to adjust the moment you start giving some "up" elevator depending on the plane you're performing the roll with. Then do the reverse as the plane goes into the second half roll to get back into normal flight. Give this given amount of up elevator progressively reaching the peak when the plane is fully inverted. On a non neutral plane, If you want to perform a good axial roll you need to input a bit of down elevator (which will make the plane go UP when it is inverted), starting, say, when the plane is three quarters into the half roll. So they require a lot less compensation, some even fly inverted indifferently. Because this is what they're built to do. The worse design for inverted flight is the high wing trainer with Clark Y airfoil through !Īerobatics and 3D ships are built differently with symmetrical profiles and are a lot more "inverted flight friendly". Other characteristics of the plane may come into play such as decalage, CoG, downthrust, etcetera, long story short, the plane tends to dive when flying inverted. On typical warbirds the airfoil is not symmetrical and doesn't work as well inverted as it does in normal flight so the resulting lift is much much weaker and doesn't compensate for gravity. ![]() Continued abuse of our services will cause your IP address to be blocked indefinitely. It's probably spending a bit more time inverted than a microsecond Please fill out the CAPTCHA below and then click the button to indicate that you agree to these terms. ![]() If you wish to be unblocked, you must agree that you will take immediate steps to rectify this issue.
